"Access Denied" After Moving Folder

Last Updated: 2/14/10

The problem is more likely to occur on Windows XP Pro then on Windows XP Home.

Symptoms: Any time you move a folder you can no longer access the folder. When you try to open it you get an error: "Access Denied".

Cause: This happens when the security ID's in your NTFS partition get corrupted.

Solution: Go to Start Menu > Run > Type "chkdsk c: /f" when a command windows appears asking you to run check on next reboot, click Y and then restart the computer. After the check is complete the computer will restart. Do the following:

Windows XP Home: Boot into "Safe Mode" by pushing F8 during the boot process before you see the Windows XP logo. After the menu appears select "Safe Mode". After you get into safe mode follow the instructions for Windows XP Pro.

Windows XP Pro: After the system finishes restarting, login and then open windows explorer. Right click on C: and select properties. Then switch to the security tab (If the security tab is not visible, in windows explorer go to Tools > Folder Options > View (Tab) > Uncheck the last box "use simple file sharing"). Select "Everyone" and make sure that the "Allow" box next to "Full Control" is checked. Then click on "Advanced" and check the box "Replace permission entries on all child objects.." Then select Apply and then ok.
Note:
This solution is for Home users who do not have advanced permissions setup. If you had previous permissions setup before this problem occurred you may have to reset all permissions
