Windows 7: L2TP VPN to Windows Server 2003

Last Updated: 7/8/10

If you are using a Windows 2003 server to provide L2TP VPN services to your users then this article may be helpful. I ran into a problem where Windows 7 users could not request a certificate from the CA (http://ca-server/certsrv), because the CA web pages don't support Windows Vista or newer operating systems.

However, I found a work around that suits my needs. I can request and export the certificate from a Windows XP computer, and then import it onto the Windows 7 computer. This then allows Windows 7 users to connect to our L2TP Microsoft VPN server running Windows servers 2003 without updating to Windows Server 2008.
