If you get an error message that says "Abnormal Program Termination" any time you open a video or DVD program then you probably have a bad video codec installed. This has happen recently to alot of people. The culprit of the bad codec is unknown, but could quite likely be Pinnacle Studio 8. Here is a quote from a forum,
"The problem went away by manually unregistering (using regsvr32 /u codec_filename.ax) the Pinnacle MJPEG and MPEG2 codecs that were apparently still present on my PC after uninstalling Pinnacle Studio 8."
The question is just finding the right files to unregister. Try searching for .ax files and .dll files by date. Then unregister the ones that look like recent video codecs.
