Google Messages App uses wrong phone number for RCS chats

Last Updated: 5/14/25

Problem: Your android mobile phone is using the wrong RCS chat phone number for text messages. It is using a temporary carrier phone number instead of your personal phone number you ported to the phone a long time ago.

Solution:

I ran into this. I updated the phone firmware, because it was three versions behind. then I did this:

option 1:

close all open apps.

hold finger on the app and select the info button in the corner when the menu pops up.

Select storage.

clear cache, and clear data.    [WARNING: you may lose some old text messages if they are not backed up to your google account]

Open the messages app and go through the setup again. it should work now.

option 2:

in the messages app, go to settings > advanced > phone number. Put in the correct phone number

option 3: contact your carriers customer support people.
