How to Handle a Corrupt Exchange Mail Store

Last Updated: 12/12/08

First of all, ALWAYS make frequent backups of your exchange mail stores. They are difficult to deal with should corruption occur.

Here are some commands that will help you deal with a corrupt exchange mail store (also called an edb file):

Run commands from c:\program files\exchsrvr\bin

X: will represent the drive where mail stores are kept.

eseutil /g "x:\Storage_Group1\mail_store_file.edb"
(3 to 5 gigabyes per hour)

eseutil /p "x:\Storage_Group1\mail_store_file.edb"
(3 to 5 gigabyes per hour)

eseutil /d "x:\Storage_Group1\mail_store_file.edb"
(3 to 5 gigabyes per hour)

isinteg -s exchangeservername -fix -test alltests
(8 to 10 gigabyes per hour)

After each command is a time estimate. Don't include that part in the command.

When my work had to deal with numerous corrupt edb files on a Windows 2003 Server running Exchange 2003 SP2, we ended up choosing OnTrack PowerControls (http://www.ontrackpowercontrols.com/) instead of the commands above. This is a very useful and powerful program for recovering from a Microsoft Exchange disaster.
