BartPE and Latitude E6400 (Intel 82567LM NIC)

Last Updated: 7/9/09

Getting BartPE to properly recognize the hardware in the Dell Latitude E6400 (and E6500) can be difficult. I downloaded the drivers for the Intel SATA controller and the Intel network adapter from Dell's website. I then integrated them into my bartpe disk (BartPE Version 3.1.10a). The SATA driver worked fine, but the network adapter was very difficult. It was recognized easily. I kept getting an error when BartPE tried to load the driver (Error: updatedriverforplugandplaydevices, failed error 5: Access Denied).

After doing some research online (GIYF), I found a solution. First use the Intel drivers instead of Dell's. Second I had to modify one of the INF files. Download the Intel driver package below for the network adapter (Intel Gigabit 82567LM).

Intel link for network card driver:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/4275/eng/PRO2KXP_v14_0.exe&agr=&ProductID=3003&DwnldId=4275&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng

After you extract that package (I used Winrar to extract), locate the file "e1y5132.inf" (It is in the Pro1000 folder). Then open the file in notepad. There should be a line near the top that needs to be changed:

Change this line:
%Intel%     = Intel, NTx86.5.1.1, NTx86.5.1, NTIA64, NTAMD64, NTx86.6.0

to this:
%Intel%     = Intel, NTx86.5.1.1

Note: I am assuming you are building your BartPE disk with either Windows XP or Windows 2003

Put the entire Pro1000 folder in the correct driver folder for BartPE and rebuild your ISO image. BartPE should not be able to correctly recognize the network adapter on the Dell Latitude E6400.

Keep in mind that if you are using this solution for a different model network adapter, you will need to edit the other INF files the same way. If you are having trouble with a driverpack or with a similar environment (UBCD4win) this solution should work for you too! Just do a search for the INF mentioned above and make the appropriate change.
