This page is an FYI to any owners of eMachine T2542 personal computers. Hopefully if your computer has the same problems I have recently encountered that this page will save you time in diagnosing the problem.
The problems I ran into include all USB ports stop function right after windows displays a message about a USB error, all sound stops functioning (AC97 integrated sound card), the Windows volume control is 'grayed out', the computer no longer powers off when you shutdown, and the computer fails to pass the Windows Memory Diagnostic. The "Sound" tab in control panel is also grayed out. I tried connecting multiple devices to the USB ports with no response from the computer whatsoever. I booted the computer from an operating system off of a CD and the USB ports still didn't work. I ran two memory diagnostics, both failed. I have concluded that this is most likely a motherboard failure. The other components of the computer seem to function fine.
I have found at least one other person with the same exact issue and same model after searching the internet. I have also experienced another similiar issue with a model T2865. I am inclined to believe that eMachines does not make high quality computers.
