Slow File transfer between Windows Server 2003 and 2008

Last Updated: 1/28/10

If you experience slow network transfer speeds between a windows server 2003 computer and a windows server 2008 then you are probably having problems with the TCP offload engine (TOE) on your server's network adapter.

To confirm this disable TOE through Windows. At a command prompt type:

Server 2003: Netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED
Server 2008: netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled

If that fixes the problem, than you can leave TOE off or if you want TOE update your network card driver and firmware and try again.

We noticed this problem on a new 2008 server when we tried to run Acronis Backup and Recovery version 10.
