Problem:
Windows XP displays the Windows XP Logo during boot, then the screen turns black (which normally happens during this stage of the boot process) but in this case the screen never changes from black to the normal Windows XP logon / welcome screen.
Solution: There can be many causes for the issue described above, but in my case booting into safe mode by pressing F8 during the boot process and deleting all the prefetch files allowed the computer to boot again (The prefetch files are located in %windir%\prefetch). Once you get it working ok, install all the critical updates from Microsoft. I suspect that this issues has something to do with Windows Update.
